10 Proven Content Hooks That Actually Stop the Scroll

The 10 hook formulas that consistently stop the scroll on Reels, TikTok, and LinkedIn — with real examples, why each one works, and a free swipe-file PDF.

Every piece of content you post is really two decisions: what you say, and how you earn the right to say it. Most brands obsess over the first and skip the second — then wonder why a genuinely good video sits at 400 views. The hook isn't a nice-to-have intro line. It's the only reason anyone sees the rest of what you made.

Why most hooks fail before the first sentence ends

The algorithm doesn't watch your content — it watches whether other people kept watching yours. That decision gets made almost instantly. A hook that opens with a slow build, a logo animation, or "Hey guys, welcome back" has already lost the viewer before the actual idea shows up. Platforms aren't punishing your content; they're just accurately reporting that nobody stayed for it.

The first 1–3 seconds do all the work

This is the one rule every hook formula below is built on: the rest of your content only matters if the hook earns it. Not the production quality. Not the caption. The first line, spoken or written, in the first 1–3 seconds — or the first sentence, if it's a static post. Everything else is downstream of that single decision.

5 hook formulas you can steal today

  • Curiosity Gap — Opens a loop the viewer needs closed and withholds the payoff. "Nobody tells you this about [topic]..." Best for Reels, TikTok, and YouTube titles — anywhere someone can scroll away in under a second.
  • Number-Led / Stat Hook — Leads with a specific, credible number. Specificity signals truth and triggers curiosity about the "how." "I grew this account to 50K in 90 days." Best for LinkedIn posts and UGC ads, where it builds instant credibility.
  • Contrarian / Pattern Interrupt — States a common belief, then flips it. The friction is what holds attention. "Stop posting every day. Here's why it's hurting you." Best for LinkedIn and the opening line of talking-head Reels.
  • Problem—Agitate — Names a specific pain point the viewer already feels, then pokes at it before offering relief. "Still manually posting on 5 platforms? That's costing you hours a week." Best for UGC ad scripts and cold outreach video.
  • Confession / Admission — Opens with a mistake, loss, or vulnerability. Builds trust through honesty before the lesson lands. "I lost a $10K client because of this one email." Best for personal-brand Reels and founder-story content.

That's five. The other five — including the two I use most for e-commerce and case-study content — are in the free PDF below, along with a cheat sheet that maps every hook type to the platform it performs best on.

Picking the right hook for the platform, not just the topic

The same idea needs a different hook depending on where it's landing. A Curiosity Gap that crushes on a Reel will feel manipulative in a LinkedIn post, where Contrarian and Number-Led hooks read as authority instead. UGC ads convert better on Problem—Agitate and Direct Callout, because a cold audience needs to feel named before they'll listen to anything else. Match the hook to the platform's default mode of trust, not just to what sounds catchy.

Rotate hooks — audiences pattern-match fast

The formula that gets 2M views once will get skipped the third time you run it verbatim. Audiences don't consciously clock a hook type, but they pattern-match structure faster than you'd think. Treat this like a rotation, not a favorite: pair a hook type with a specific, real number or detail whenever possible — vague hooks underperform specific ones — and cycle through formulas across your content calendar instead of leaning on the one that worked last month.

None of this replaces strategy — a great hook on a post with no underlying content pillar just gets you a one-time view, not a follower who comes back. But it is the one tactical skill that determines whether your strategy ever gets seen at all.
